It seems to me that there must be some filter. To treat all strangers as a benefit is downright crazy dangerous. My personal standard is this: I trust a combat veteran until he demonstrates that he is untrustworthy. I do not trust anyone else until he or she proves to be trustworthy. Of course that is not a singular or universal test, but it is mine and has stood me in pretty good stead over the past ten years. I would be interested in knowing if there is any research into standards used by others.
