Are Strangers a Benefit or a Cost?

If you trust the world, strangers add to your diverse treasure of interesting experiences.

If you fear the world, strangers cost you an expensive evaluation of their threat.

It seems to me that there must be some filter. To treat all strangers as a benefit is downright crazy dangerous. My personal standard is this: I trust a combat veteran until he demonstrates that he is untrustworthy. I do not trust anyone else until he or she proves to be trustworthy. Of course that is not a singular or universal test, but it is mine and has stood me in pretty good stead over the past ten years. I would be interested in knowing if there is any research into standards used by others.
