White resentment of African Americans is a strong predictor of support for Donald Trump.
This survey found that, on a 17-point scale, a majority of white Republicans fell into the top four levels of racial resentment, and fully a quarter took the most extreme position.

I read the NY times article, and it indicated that many respondents would offer much different opinions online(which was private) than they would admit to by phone. That is: there darkest and deepest resentments would surface it they did not have to identify themselves which is the condition of the ballet box
A very interesting article. While I hold no brief for either of the candidates (both of whom have an unfavorability rating on the far side of 50 percent--an American first), I understand the findings. I suspect that the New England, Pacific coast, and ivory tower elites are going to be surprised by what the American electorate really thinks. Still, I also suspect that party loyalty will reassert itself to some degree as November gets closer.
