Young liberals become old conservatives by clinging to the progressive ideas of their youth, which becomes the status quo that the young of the next generation attack.
While at Centre, I worked over the Summer one year and was talking to one of the visiting professors who was teaching at the Governor's Scholars program. He was very upset that his students were too "conservative and religious" and would not rebel against authority with him. When I pointed out that he was the authority and they were rebelling he looked at me like I was insane and I don't think he spoke to me again for the remainder of his time there.
I take this to be a hopeful outlook on the progressive movement! Hear, hear to that! Also, in response to Ken, I too experienced the same thing when I started teaching. It was a dark day when I realized I was The Man, the establishment, to someone. Though I'd like to consider myself a young man, my high school students do not see me as such.

Do you recall what in particular he wanted them to rebel against?
