Are Any Presidents Acceptable to the Political Extremes?

My Tea Party friends object to President Obama as a socialist.

My left-wing friends object to president Obama for giving in to corporate interests.

My questions to each group are parallel.

They are genuine questions - I really want to know, and I do not know the answers.

Is there any president who you think was not a socialist?

Is there any president who you think did not give in to corporate interests?

I take your point, but I think you're drawing a false equivalence.

I do not think there have been any presidents who have not been beholden to corporate interests, especially in the all-millionaire-President club of the last 90 years. That doesn't mean that pressure to shed them is without benefit. Obama raised more of his campaign money from small, individual donations than his competitors for the nomination or the Presidency, and I thought--and still think--that was a positive sign.

Obama has received more money from banking interests in three years than did Bush in eight years.

Obama is the first.

Do you have a source for that figure, Jack? Open Secret gives me incomplete contribution numbers election by election, but I have not been able to find totals.

So, Anonymous, you are arguing that Obama is a socialist, but the presidents who created Social Security, Medicare, the Erie Canal, the transcontinental railroads, the income tax, the military draft, the interstate highways, comprehensive wage and price controls, or the Department of Homeland Security, just to name a few - none of those guys are socialists?

You must have a very unusual definition of "socialist."

The Sunlight Foundations Influence Project. Funny that you didn't question Brendans source.

Not questioning, just looking for it.

Any of the Republicans in the race are acceptable to me.

For what it's worth, a source.
