Single Young Women Earn More Than Men

Single, childless, young women earn more than comparable men.

This is good: it shows that more education and more persistent work reap better pay.

This is also good because it helps chip away at the myth the women, on average, earn less than men because of sex discrimination.

Women earn less than men, on average, because women who are not single, childless, and young tend to make choices that trade earning for control of their time for family life and for doing only work that they want to do.

We have to make decisions in the best interest of our families because our husbands make more money until they make those decisions and our children's fathers who aren't our husbands won't make those decisions. Idiot.

Thought she was calling you an idjit. Maybe I was wrong.

Yeah, I got that, but what for? Does she think there is something wrong with wives and mothers cutting back on work to invest in their families and to do only the work they want to? I sure don't.

Nate's parents and I have been talking about this all weekend!

Kelly: What did you conclude?

We concluded that we've been lied to. Their youngest is taking his required Women's Studies class, and I was talking about mine, which was more about fighting the patriarchy by not shaving your armpits than anything else. My Lit Crit classes were much better about actual gender related issues. Anyway- I'm 30, and the statistic about women making 70% or what men make was drilled into women my age in school. That stat, apparently, didn't consider education, experience, or even career field, so even when they did the study (1969? The UN, I think) it was a useless stat. I knew the numbers had changed, but I didn't know they had changed that much.
