Paying Taxes Is Patriotic

Today is Tax Day.

This is the day when all Americans should celebrate the services that we have hired the government to provide. I have already eaten food that was safe and regulated, sit in a house that was built to code, use electric appliances built to standard, and wear clothes made cheaper by trade agreements. Soon I will walk down city sidewalks, cross a state highway, past dormitories built with government-backed bonds, to teach students who can be at Centre College because of their federal loans.

But before I go to work, I will put up the flag and thank all those who served in our armed forces to keep me and my family free to enjoy all of this and much more.

Paying taxes is a patriotic duty that I can do with a grateful heart.

It is the amount that we are forced to pay and the ways in which our taxes are used that bother most patriotic people who might disagree with you.

All you wealthy Obama supporters who want to pay more and more taxes, go ahead. I'm sure the government will accept your donations. That would truly be patriotic.

Unless you are very wealthy, puchie, President Obama just lowered your taxes.

You got me there Beau. I'm getting a $14.00 tax cut this month. How much are you getting?

It's funny how otherwise-rational people become completely irrational at tax season. If you want social services - like policemen and policewomen to keep your streets safe, teachers to teach your children and schools for them to teach in, etc - you have to pay for those things. Period. Even in America there's no such thing as a free lunch.

Nobody said they didn't want to pay for police, firefighters, schools, etc. What we don't want to pay for is the pet projects of the politicians and we don't want to pay for those programs that reward those who are not willing to work and act responsibly.
